Case study No.3: Connecting the screw feeder to extruder

Pressure-Proof Screw Feeder for High-Temperature Powder Feeding into Extruder

In the production of resins and composite materials, the extruder plays a crucial role in continuously shaping and processing raw materials. To ensure stable feeding into the extruder, a reliable screw feeder for powder is essential.

This case study introduces a custom-built, pressure-proof screw feeder installed at a chemical manufacturer’s facility, designed to feed powder materials directly into a high-temperature extruder.
In the photo, you can see how the powder is transferred from the hopper through the screw feeder into the heated section of the process line.

Designed for High-Temperature and Pressure Environments

The feeding area in this application reached temperatures close to 200°C, with internal pressure conditions present at the screw outlet. This required a screw feeder that could withstand both high temperature and pressure, leading to several key customizations:

Heat-resistant sealing (with special high-temperature gaskets)
・Pressure-proof housing construction
・Heat-resistant motor and control components

Additionally, since the process involved multiple types of powders with different flow characteristics, we developed three interchangeable screw designs, each optimized for different material properties such as particle size, flowability, and adhesion.

This approach ensured smooth and consistent powder feeding into the extruder, contributing to improved process stability and product quality.

Integrated Control with the Extruder

The extruder’s performance is highly sensitive to fluctuations in powder feed rate, viscosity, and heating timing. Any inconsistency in powder supply can cause pressure instability or quality issues.

To address this, the screw feeder was equipped with a speed controller with inverter enabling it to operate in sync with the extruder’s control system. This integrated control helped maintain uniform extrusion and stable production.

As a result of this installation, the customer reported a significant improvement in feeding stability, leading to reduced defects and better overall process yield.

If you’re facing challenges with powder feeding into extruders, especially under high-temperature or pressure conditions, our custom screw feeders can provide a reliable solution tailored to your needs.
